Sanctity of Human Life Sunday

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,.."  Jeremiah 1:5

Today is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday.

In light of this important topic and because we are at important crossroads, politically, I am re-posting my thoughts from January 2009 - shortly after Obama took office.

I believe as Christians, we must participate in our election process.  I believe as Christians we must evaluate each candidate and pick the one most likely to look to God and the Bible for guidance, and the one most likely to govern using Biblical principles.

I don't believe we can make this, or any election, a one-issue election, but surely we can ask God for guidance and discernment to direct us in voting for the next President of the United States and Leader of the Free World.

Another reason the Presidential Election is so critical (especially in view of the abortion issue) is that the President is responsible for appointing Supreme Court Justices.  It is likely the upcoming President will make at least one appointment, and therefore has the power to either keep the Court conservative, or, as what will happen under Obama, appoint liberal activist Justices--ones very pro-abortion.  Directly or indirectly, your vote will have major ramifications for or against unborn children.

Whoever the Republican nominee is, he will be immensely better than Barak Obama.  Life for Americans will be better, and many babies in America will be given the chance to have a life.

Some Questions to Think About as We Mark the 36th* Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

1.) President Obama recently signed an Executive Order reinstating the U.S.’s funding of abortions worldwide. If we are in such a dire economic crisis (and I think we are…) how can we afford to give money to other countries for the purpose of abortion? Do we even have that money to give?

2.) If science is to be restored “to its rightful place,” how can it be used to justify stem cell research on human embryos but ignored when it comes to all the extensive evidence showing early stages of pregnancy and life?

3.) How is it that Nancy Pelosi can allocate millions of dollars in the bailout for contraception, stating/implying that children are more costly than the money used to prevent them? (It looks hopeful that Republicans can get this part of the bail out distribution changed.)

4.) How is it that more taxes are demanded “for the children” for education, Head Start, breakfast and lunch programs, after school programs, arts programs, and other programs ad infinitum and yet unborn children have no rights and are legally murdered?

5.) How is it that we have laws to protect endangered species and the habitats they need (with high penalties for infractions), and yet we cannot protect unborn children?

6.) How is it we have laws to protect the environment, and yet cannot protect our unborn children?

7.) Is it a coincidence that pictures of aborted babies look strikingly similar to pictures of Holocaust atrocities?

8.) How can people who profess to be Christian be pro-abortion when the Bible clearly states God’s position on life?

9.) How is it that no one sees the hypocrisy in all these points of fact?

10.) How can women who have had children be pro-abortion? They have felt the fluttering and early stirrings of life within them; felt the kicks and elbows, felt the hiccups, and pushed out a new little life.

11.)What can I do to make a difference and protect unborn children?

*Today we mark 39 years since Roe v Wade has made abortion legal.

Sweet Memories of Christmas 2011

Our recap of Christmas is sweet in many ways, most of which involves kids and granddaughter being here to share in that special time of year.  But to begin with, no Brumfield Christmas is complete without the traditional making of the cookie cutter cookies.  Natalie happily volunteered to roll out the cookies, and then discovered she had another helper.  Sweet.....

Then, of course, step two in the process: frosting and decorating the cookies.  Again we were lucky enough to recruit some volunteer helpers.

Our pretty Christmas tree!

Kristin and Josh were here in between their work schedules which was really nice, and Eric, Chelsea, and Addison were here for a few days too, so we had a wonderful time together.

Eric and Chelsea had reported that Addison was walking, and we saw first hand that not only is she walking, she is walking well.  We had fun unwrapping presents together.

"...I know I have alot of neat presents, but this ribbon is really fun too!"

"Daddy got an i-Pad 2; I love touch screens!"

I think this came in my stocking...., your musical table is over there....

Hangin' with the Aunties!

I can't get any coverage with this phone of mine.

Ahh, that's more like it, do you have 'roaming' Auntie Kristin?

The stair climbing challenge - I did it!  Have not quite figured out the coming down part, though.

Peas, Yum!!

The Joy Dare 2012

I have been reading Ann Voscamp's blog (A Holy Experience) for about 4 years now, and probably should have recommended it before now!  She is a homeschool mother of 6 children and lives on a farm in Canada.  Many, many times the words she writes resonate with my heart.  Her writings have encouraged me and challenged me.  She has written a book, One Thousand Gifts, where she chronicles her life and journey; it is the history and background of her first venture into purposefully choosing to seek and to see the many ways God blesses us.

This year, she asked her reading audience to join her in "The Joy Dare," which is keeping a daily journal and noting at least 3 things a day that you are grateful for.   At the end of the year, each of us will have noted one thousand (if not more...) ways the Lord has blessed us and expressed gratitude for those things.  I decided to join with the readership and participate in the Joy Dare this year, and it has been fun and refreshing!  Doing this small daily discipline allows you to slow down and note many things you might otherwise miss.

It's certainly not too late to join the Joy Dare--Do it!  You will be blessed!

P.S.  To read more about The Joy Dare, go to Ann's blog  or One Thousand Gifts website.

Because It Really Is A New Year

At the beginning of each new year, I try to find some time to quietly stop and assess the past year.  "Assess" sounds kind of clinical, but I really want to dedicate some time to looking back and thinking about the year that has just ended.  It also gives me the chance to think about and see what God did and thank Him for the many blessings during the year.  After "walking" through the days of the last year, comes the second part of my new year's custom: looking forward to the new year ahead.  The past few years God has impressed upon me a "theme" for the year.  This year I believe my theme is "To know Christ."  I still need to pray about it some more, but right now, that seems to fit.

Mark Buchanan is a favorite author of mine, and I loved his blog post for the new year.  (Of course, it doesn't hurt that he includes a Calvin and Hobbs cartoon at the beginning...)

You can read it here:  Making All Things New by Mark Buchanan.
It gave me a new perspective on 'resolution making' and it may inspire you, too.

May your 2012 be blessed!
